Hoffman Estates IL area specialists use a proven lung test to identify breathing-related concerns
One of every five Americans has either an allergy or asthma. More than half of asthma sufferers also have allergies, making allergic asthma the most common form of this chronic lung disease.
Breathing problems are scary. You may suspect inhaling dust, mold, pollen, animal dander, and other allergens are to blame for your respiratory difficulty. Lung function naturally decreases with age, but related diseases are among the world’s most common conditions. These diseases include:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Chronic bronchitis
The sooner Drs. Noga Askenazi and Eugenia Hahn can get to the root of your symptoms, the sooner they can develop a treatment to ease those worrisome symptoms.
Advanced Allergy & Asthma Associates and Food Allergy Center of Illinois uses a tried and true method to diagnose the nature and cause of your breathing problems: spirometry.
Spirometry gets its name from a machine called a spirometer. You will breathe into a tube attached to this machine. Dr. Askenazi, Hahn, or Patel will then give you some simple instructions, such as to breathe in and out normally, to exhale out and inhale as much air as you can, and to blow out quickly and with force. The spirometer will measure how this air moves, as well as the volume of air traveling in and out of your lungs.
While the test only takes about 15 minutes, it can measure many indicators. A few key indicators include forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume, which measures the largest amount of air forcefully exhaled after deep inhalation and the amount of air forced out in one second respectively.
A lower than normal FVC and FEV-1 suggest restricted breathing and more significant obstruction respectively.
Drs. Askenazi, Hahn, and Patel will help you prepare for the tests, as some drugs such as inhaled bronchodilators can affect the test results and require repeated tests.
